Turn Up The Silence

What Is Meditation?

The meaning of the word “meditate” is “to become familiar with.”

In meditation, we intentionally set aside distractions and judgments to the best of our abilities. What we are left with is a purer form of our own personal experience, embedded in profound and vast silence. By removing the noise, we become more familiar with the deepest essence of who we are, uncolored by any external conditions.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Like getting to know another person, becoming familiar with yourself and your personal experience takes time and effort. It does not happen all at once the instant you sit down to meditate for the first time. Still, it is quite likely that if you practice diligently, you will experience significant breakthroughs from time to time. The most important aspect is that you continue working consistently.

There is a saying in the meditation world: “There’s no such thing as a bad meditation.” Some days, you will be extremely focused and your mind will be razor-sharp; other days, nothing you do will calm your restless mind. It doesn’t matter! Just setting aside the time to get to know yourself is all that is required. By definition, this is an act of love, regardless of how your meditation goes.

The more often you practice, the faster you’ll learn. Ultimately, a stable meditation practice provides a vast, peaceful space in your life — a safe refuge from the chaos of the world. When you reach this stage, your practice will effortlessly support itself, but until then, some effort will be required. Be brave and confident about setting aside the time whenever you can and aim to practice daily, even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time.
